What is the National Pollutant Inventory (NPI)?

In South Australia NPI data comes from a combination of EPA licensed and non-licensed facilities. A business may need to report to the NPI even if it is not licensed by EPA.

The NPI is an internet database containing information on the types and quantities of pollutants being emitted from a range of industrial, commercial, transport and household activities.

While the NPI is a federal initiative, each state is responsible for implementing the program. The South Australian EPA has established an NPI team to run South Australia's program.

The NPI emission information will:

  • help in environmental planning and management
  • promote waste minimisation and cleaner production by industry and business, leading to energy and resource savings
  • satisfy community demand for accessible information on pollutant emissions to the environment
  • increase community awareness of the contribution to pollution from many different sources.
