The SmokeWatch program was originally piloted in the winters of 2006 and 2007 by the EPA in partnership with the Adelaide Hills Council.
Householders in the council area were provided with a variety of information to assist them in using their wood heaters more efficiently, so as to reduce wood smoke pollution.
Local businesses were also approached to support the program. Primary schools in the area were engaged to increase student understanding of wood smoke issues with the aim that these messages would filter through to school families.
As part of the two-year pilot study the EPA also monitored air quality in the Adelaide Hills to obtain information on the level of wood smoke and assess the success of the program.
