Ionising radiation is used daily in hospitals and clinics to perform diagnostic imaging procedures, as well as therapy for a number of diseases.

The most commonly mentioned forms of ionising radiation are X-rays and gamma rays. Ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) do not use ionising radiation but are common radiology tests.

Imaging procedures that use radiation are necessary for accurate diagnosis of disease and injury. They provide important information about your health to your doctor and help ensure that you receive appropriate care.

Physicians and technicians performing these procedures are trained to use the minimum amount of radiation necessary for the procedure. Benefits from the medical procedure greatly outweigh any potential small risk of harm from the amount of radiation used.

The following links contain useful information on the different types of radiological procedures that are performed every day in hospitals and health clinics.

Note: if you have any questions regarding the tests you or a family member are undergoing, please ask your health practitioner for more information.
