The use of radiation in schools allows hands-on experience with real radiation sources and gives benefits from a science learning perspective. As with any other potentially hazardous material, chemical or electrical appliance, there are some rules to ensure that the radiation sources are used safely and appropriately.

The National Health and Medical Research Council's Code of Practice for the Safe Use of Ionizing Radiation in Schools (1986) details practical advice and guidance for the safe use of radiation.

The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) is currently in the process of releasing a new safety guide in two parts.

The Safety Guide for the Use of Radiation in Schools Part 1: Ionizing Radiation (2009) can be found on the ARPANSA website.

Part 2 of the safety guide relating to the use of lasers was released for public comment in 2012. The details of the consultation and the Public Consultation Draft Safety Guide for the Use of Radiation in Schools - Part 2: Lasers can be found here.

Teachers wishing to use radiation in schools and have further enquiries (for example the types of radiation allowed, and the SA regulatory requirements) should email or contact the Radiation Protection Branch for advice on (08) 8463 7826.
