Under the Radiation Protection and Control Act 1982, all ionising radiation apparatus must be registered and operated by licensed operators.
The Radiation Protection and Control (Ionising Radiation) Regulations 2000 govern the sale, installation and safe use of ionising radiation apparatus.
Only apparatus that have been constructed, shielded and installed according to the Regulations are registered.
It is the responsibility of all owners of X-ray machines to ensure that all ionising radiation apparatus are registered and operated by licensed operators and that conditions applied to registrations and licences are adhered to.
Sale
If you are selling, replacing or disposing of X-ray apparatus or major components, you must notify the EPA using the form below within seven days of the sale or disposal.
Relocation
If you are relocating X-ray apparatus, you must notify the EPA using the form below within fourteen days of the change.

Third party testing of diagnostic x-ray apparatus
On 15 June 2009 third party testing of diagnostic x-ray apparatus was made possible in South Australia. The third party certification program allows owners of apparatus to engage the services of accredited testers to perform compliance tests as a prerequisite to apparatus registration.
