The site contamination audit system is a key strategy to assist in the management of site contamination in South Australia.

The legislative framework for the statutory audit system is established in the Environment Protection Act 1993 and the Environment Protection Regulations 2009. The audit system became operational on 1 July 2009.

The EPA is responsible for administering the site contamination audit system. The EPA maintains the integrity of the audit system by accrediting individuals as site contamination auditors and ensuring site contamination audits are carried out in accordance with the legislation and guidance issued or approved by the EPA.

A guideline to support the audit system has been prepared by the EPA. It provides information about the site contamination audit system, the accreditation process for site contamination auditors, and the responsibilities and obligations of site contamination auditors and other persons in relation to site contamination audits.

Site contamination auditor accreditation

The EPA will from time to time invite applications from individuals who are interested in being accredited as site contamination auditors under Division 4 of Part 10A of the Environment Protection Act.

The application period for 2012 will commence in mid May 2012.
Application period: 14 May to 22 June 2012 (6 weeks)
Information session: 22 May 2012 >>More
Consideration of written applications: late June to mid August
Interviews with the accreditation committee: early September
Notification to applicants: mid/late October.

Mutual recognition

Auditors already appointed in an equivalent occupation in other states or territories who seek registration in South Australia in accordance with mutual recognition legislation, should not use the application process outlined below but apply using the mutual recognition process.

Applications for mutual recognition can be made to the EPA at any time.
