This section provides information relating to the EPA’s position and requirements on the storage, treatment, recycling and reuse of liquid waste.
Liquid waste can be produced by all sectors of society, and includes sewage as well as wastewater from industrial processes such as food and agricultural processing, and manufacturing.
Liquid waste can be subdivided into other waste types based on the nature of the liquid waste and the risks it poses. For example, wastewater may contain organic substances and nutrients that are of value to agriculture, or may be hazardous due to the chemicals or pathogens it contains.
EPA approval may be required for liquid wastes to be used in a sustainable manner for irrigation or other purposes. Liquids not suitable for this reuse must go to sewer (with SA Water approval) or be taken to a liquid waste treatment facility.
Septic tank wastes may be disposed/reused in accordance with the Draft South Australian Biosolids Guideline.
Persons transporting liquid waste (which cannot be discharged directly to sewer) for fee or reward are required to be licensed under the Environment Protection Act 1993.
Persons transporting septic tank waste for fee or reward also require a licence.
