Many in the waste management industry are finding new ways to reuse and recover waste, rather than simply disposing it in landfills or other locations.

In response to this industry trend, the EPA has also broadened our focus beyond waste disposal to deal with applications for reuse projects on a case-by-case basis.

The EPA Board formed a subcommittee (May–October 2007) to consider these changes in the waste management industry, and published their findings and recommendations in the EPA Board Waste to Resources Subcommittee Report (297.5 KB PDF). The recommendations of the report included:

  • reviewing the approach of waste to resources in the Environment Protection Act 1993 to ensure a risk-based framework is provided
  • developing an Environment Protection Policy (EPP) to promote sustainability objectives
  • articulating the objectives and principles of waste management regulation in South Australia
  • developing further advice on waste-derived materials.

The EPA has addressed these recommendations through the Waste Reform Project and consulted with industry throughout the project.
