Order: Coleoptera
Family: Dytiscidae
Scientific Name: Sternopriscus sp.
Common Name: Predacious diving beetle

The Finniss River, east of Yundi is quite diverse with almost 170 aquatic invertebrates collected from this site between 1994 and 2004. However, most of these invertebrates are commonly found in South Australian inland waters. Many aquatic plants grow in the river and the site has both deep and shallow sections as well as flowing and still areas. This variation in habitat type provides refuge for a diverse array of macroinvertebrates.

The have been 26 species of beetles collected from this site in the past ten years, one of which is the predacious diving beetle, Sternopriscus, which can be found in the slow flowing sections of the river. As the name suggests they are predators and feed on other smaller insects. They are able to dive deep under water to retrieve their meal.
