Ambient Air Quality

In June 1998 the National Environment Protection Council agreed to set uniform standards for ambient air quality. (Ambient air does not include indoor air.) Standards were set at this time for six primary air pollutants. Information on the original Ambient Air NEPM can be found at www.ephc.gov.au/nepms/air/air_nepm.html

The Ambient Air NEPM was varied in March 2003 to add an advisory reporting standard for particles less than 2.5 microns in diameter (PM2.5). Click here for more information of the Ambient Air NEPM as varied May 2003.

The Air NEPM is currently being reviewed and some standards may be varied in 2008-09.

Air Toxics

The Air Toxics NEPM establishes a guideline and protocol to facilitate monitoring and reporting on five air toxics: benzene, toluene, xylene, formaldehyde and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). These air toxics have been associated with a range of health problems.

More information in relation to the Air Toxics NEPM can be found at www.ephc.gov.au/nepms/air/air_toxics.html
