National Packaging Covenant

Used packagingThe National Packaging Covenant is a voluntary initiative by government and industry, to reduce the environmental effects of packaging on the environment. Companies that have signed the Covenant are preparing and implementing action plans to take responsibility for the environmental impact and the ultimate disposal of their packaging.

The Covenant website provides case studies on Covenant signatories along with general information and supporting publications the Covenant.

Kerbside recycling study

Before committing industry and government to a path of continuous improvement, an Independent Assessment of Kerbside Recycling in Australia was completed as a matter of priority. It is the most comprehensive study of recycling undertaken in Australia, measuring the financial, environmental and social benefits and costs of recycling. The study translates the environmental impacts into dollar terms to indicate the scale of these benefits.

Environment Protection Policy

To ensure that Covenant signatories are not disadvantaged in the marketplace and to encourage participation, the Covenant framework includes a regulatory instrument, the National Environmental Protection Measure (NEPM) for Used Packaging Materials developed by the National Environment Protection Council (NEPC). The NEPM is implemented as an Environment Protection Policy in South Australia.
