Biodiversity

Poor water quality has an adverse effect on the health of aquatic plant and animal communities. Pollution, particularly from heavy metals, nutrients, salt, and toxic blue-green algae, is a major problem.

Recreation and tourism

Pollution makes water less attractive for recreation and eco-tourism and may render it completely unsuitable. Poor water clarity can be a danger to swimmers as it reduces the chance of swimmers seeing obstacles such as rocks and logs.
