Media statement on Adbri

The SA EPA is continuing to investigate a series of complaints to understand how site activities last week at Adbri Cement Birkenhead contributed to the elevated dust levels that were observed and reported by the community in the vicinity of the site.
On Friday 17 May Adbri confirmed that the major sources of the recent elevated dust emissions were related to mechanical issues with a fan and an open vent in a materials storage shed and that remedial measures had been implemented, with the fan fixed and containment of the shed being completed.
The EPA plans to inspect the Adbri site today to examine these measures and to further ensure that the company has implemented all of the necessary steps for an incident of this type, including following the air particulate management and monitoring plans approved under its licence.
Last week the EPA met with Adbri on 15 May and undertook surveillance of the local area around the site.
The EPA will continue to closely monitor Adbri’s compliance with its licence conditions by conducting inspections and assessing measures the company is required to implement to minimise impacts of its cement production operations at Birkenhead.
