Sellicks Beach (Southern Quarries)
Southern Quarries operate the dolomite and bluestone quarry at Sellicks Hill, which has been mined since the early 1970s and is owned by Adelaide Brighton Limited. Southern Quarries has a license from the EPA for activities of environmental significance. Licence conditions include dust prevention, stormwater management, waste management and operational management.
In March 2016 the EPA revised Southern Quarries’ licence conditions, requiring it to develop a dust management plan. This plan, implemented in June 2016, requires Southern Quarries to identify likely sources of dust from its activities and provide for all reasonable and practicable measures for minimising dust emissions.
The EPA has recently been investigating complaints from the community that dust coming from the Southern Quarries site at Sellicks Hill is creating local nuisance. The EPA has collected evidence in regards to the operations and the effectiveness of measures implemented by Southern Quarries to mitigate dust coming from the site that have been required by the EPA under its dust management plan. Please see the Community Update below.
During April 2018, the EPA has met with Southern Quarries and required it to review the impact from blasting and non-blasting dust coming from their site, and to review and strengthen their engagement with the local community. These updates are expected to be discussed at a subsequent meeting in May with a view to incorporation into a revised dust management plan being submitted for EPA approval in June 2018.
Air monitoring report
Air was monitored from January 2016 to February 2017, to enable the EPA to carefully examine particulate matter in conjunction with wind speed, direction measurements, and other available information to understand sources of dust in the area.
