Radiation guidance documents
The Radiation Protection and Control Act 2021 and Radiation Protection and Control Regulations 2022 commenced on 11 February 2023.
This new legislation replaces an Act that was 40 years old and introduces several significant changes to the way radiation safety is regulated in South Australia. By implementing a risk-based and outcomes-focused approach, this change aims to support new technologies, enable innovative approaches to radiation safety, and ensures the access of all South Australians to the benefits of the safe and justified uses of radiation.
To promote greater national uniformity to radiation safety several international standards and national ARPANSA codes have been adopted. Where there is no currently existing standard the EPA has published a set of Codes of Compliance which detail mandatory requirements for a number of specific operations involving the use of radiation.
A number of sector specific guidance documents have been prepared which outlines some key changes associated with the new legislation.
