Hazardous household waste
Most households contain a wide variety of substances in the kitchen, laundry, garage and garden shed that are potentially hazardous to human health and safety and/or the environment.
Household hazardous materials are products that are likely to be:
- poisonous (toxic)
- corrosive
- flammable
- explosive
- reactive.
Paints, pesticides, waste oils, cleaners, solvents, pool chemicals, drain cleaners, degreasers and other car care products, batteries and polishes are all examples of household materials that could be hazardous if stored, used or disposed of improperly.
The used containers and leftover contents of such consumer products are known as ‘household hazardous waste’. In the same way that the products should be used carefully, it is extremely important for everyone to manage these hazardous wastes in a responsible way to minimise any risks.
