EPA assessment area
The EPA is commencing a program of environmental assessment work in Albert Park in March 2019. This work is to determine whether chemicals used in historical industrial practices might be a risk to human health, coming from vapour in the soil.
A site at 24 Murray Street Albert Park was formerly used to manufacture tin cans between 1940 and 1984. A number of other larger manufacturing companies have continued operations in the industrial complex since World War II.
The EPA became aware of site contamination at this location in 2018 and is undertaking this work as the liable person no longer exists. Results are expected to be communicated to residents after analysis and reporting to the EPA in June–July 2019.
In order to protect residents from exposure to contaminated bore water, the EPA is proposing to establish a groundwater prohibition area in portions of Hendon, Royal Park, Seaton and Albert Park. Please visit engage.epa.sa.gov.au for further information.
