EPA assessment area
The EPA commenced environmental assessments in Brighton in February 2018, after soil vapour contamination from tetrachloroethene (PCE) was identified during the redevelopment of a commercial site.
The work found PCE in soil vapour across the assessment area (please see map below). The work also found that the source of the PCE contamination is likely to be a dry cleaning premises on Brighton Road, and that a liable party is therefore responsible for future work.
In order to assess whether there is any risk of PCE entering into residential properties, further work is required. The EPA is regulating the liable party to undertake this work, which is expected to commence in mid May 2018.
The EPA will ensure residents are kept informed as this work progresses.
Groundwater (bore water) in this area may be contaminated and should not be used for any purpose. Mains water supplied by SA Water is not affected by this issue. Home grown fruit and vegetables are safe to consume, provided they are not watered with bore water.
