Map: Groundwater monitoring locations in the Lower Lakes
In 2009 the Department of Environment and Water (DEW) commissioned a project to examine acidity generation and transport in the groundwater under the exposed lake bed soils of Lake Alexandrina, Lake Albert and Currency Creek. This project is part of the South Australian Government's Murray Futures program funded by the Australian Government's Water for the Future initiative, and is managed by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. The EPA has conducted the monitoring requirements of this project since May 2010.
This study measures key quality parameters, including pH, acidity and alkalinity in groundwater. The data collected as part of this project is used to examine the extent of groundwater acidity at particular locations and assist in calculations of the movement of acidic groundwater through the soils to lake waters. Since September 2010, the rising lake water levels meant that all monitoring locations were inundated with lake water. Since September 2010, monitoring has continued in the inundated shallow groundwater sites of previously acidic sites quarterly. Please see reports for more detailed summaries and interpretation
