Global action

In 2015, World Health Organization Member States adopted a resolution that recognises air pollution as a global health risk and committed to action to:

  • build the knowledge base
  • monitor and report
  • strengthen institutional capacity
  • develop global leadership and coordination.

The United Nations’ New Urban Agenda, the Sustainable Development Goals and the Breathe Life Campaign all call for action to improve urban air quality and deliver social, environmental and economic co-benefits.

World cities, including London, Paris, Mexico City, Madrid and Athens, have pledged to remove all diesel vehicles, while promoting walking and cycling infrastructure.

In Asia, a pilot city certification program encourages cities to make advances in air quality management.
